Melissa Provost was born in Lansing, Michigan, studied at the University of Michigan and Columbia University, and is a family nurse practitioner in a primary-care clinic in New York City. She’s intensely interested in learning Spanish with the Rosetta Stone solution so she can better communicate with and thus better serve her patients. Many patients at the clinic where Melissa works do not speak English, and the language barrier makes it difficult for them to understand their diagnoses, follow a provider’s suggestions, deal with insurance and billing, and take medication in the recommended way.
Studying Spanish will also give Melissa a sense of how her patients feel in an environment where most communication takes place in a nonnative language. Eventually, she’ll be able to explain “twice a day” or “less salt” in words she has in common with her patients—hopefully leading them to success in improving their own health.
