iPad App Launch: Rosetta Stone® TOTALe Course™ HD

update copy, new Rosetta Stone, language learning

Rosetta Stone iPad app

Click to download from Apple iTunes.

Today we’re extremely pleased to announce Rosetta Stone’s first-ever application built specifically for the iPad device, the Rosetta Stone® TOTALe Course™ HD app. Working on this product was my first major project as a software developer at Rosetta Stone, so in addition to learning a lot about Rosetta Stone technology, it was also my introduction to much of the company culture.

While projects are in development at Rosetta Stone, they often have code names like Dogwalk or Viper, which we use to refer to products internally before they are given their official names like Rosetta Stone® Version 4 TOTALe®. The iPad app was no exception to this rule. The development team picked the code name Pelican for this project because we thought a bird would be a great mascot for a mobile product and also because Project Pelican was alliterative and fun to say.

Working on this project was a blast, and seeing the app come to life over a period of five months was a great learning experience—both technically and linguistically. During the process of making the app, the development team had to learn about special characteristics of certain languages—for instance, umlauts in German and Swedish or the various script systems for Chinese and Japanese. Our mobile apps development room in Harrisonburg, Virginia, was always abuzz with the sounds of a dozen different languages and developers and testers playing with different ways of making the experience of Rosetta Stone’s flagship product come alive in a completely different medium.

There was a real sense of joy and freedom that those of us working on the product felt and that I think has translated directly into the experience of using the app. One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we get about the app is that it’s fun, which is exactly what we intended. Going through Rosetta Course™ on the iPad device is fun both because you can use your hands to interact and because you can use it on the go, anywhere you have a wireless internet connection—in the lobby of the doctor’s office, at the gate at the airport, or just lying down on your couch at home.

I spent some time over the past holiday weekend just lounging around on my couch learning Spanish on the TOTALe Course™ HD app, and I was amazed at how much we’d accomplished in just five short months. Before I knew it, two hours had gone by, and I was learning all sorts of words in Spanish without really thinking about it. All of us on Team Pelican truly hope that this will be the experience of our learners. The TOTALe Course HD app offers a new way to engage with Rosetta Stone’s exciting learning techniques, and you’ll have so much fun that you’ll almost forget that you’re doing something most people think of as really challenging: learning a completely new language.

Now available for the iPad, TOTALe Course™ HD gives Rosetta Stone Version 4 TOTALe learners an exclusive, new way to enrich their language-learning experience. This app is available to TOTALe subscribers, allowing them to continue their language learning success—anywhere they are connected using their iPad device. Learners with a TOTALe subscription can now use TOTALe Course™ HD to supplement their learning with access to Rosetta Course components through the user-friendly, touch-screen interface of the iPad. Rosetta Stone just just became hip and relevant! I don’t have to worry about working out the “logistics” of immersing myself. I learned on May 26th, 2011 that RS was announcing this app on june 2nd. I ordered my 1st ipad (version2 3G) on June 2, 2011. Will upgrade my spanish language version 3 to Totale. Since Im on the road a lot, this will help me realize my goal of of learning Spanish….and brushing up on my French.

Bravo to the folks at RS!!!

    • Rosetta Stone

We’re so happy for you, Badou! Thanks for sharing your story!

  • Alex

Germany I can not download it -,,, and is it working with the online licence?
    Best regards
    Alex

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Alex, the iPad application has not been released in Germany because you need Version 4 TOTALe to use it. Unfortunately, this product is not on sale yet in Germany. It’s only available in the US, UK, Japan, and Canada. Sorry about that!

  • badcop

Finally! Can you please confirm that Totale Companion HD will be available to v4 customers in the UK? I see it downloadable from iTunes US store but not from the UK store. Please advise. Thank you.

    • Rosetta Stone

It is available in the UK as well. You should be able to download it directly from your device.

  • William Goetsch

I took your “test drive” (Spanish, Latin America) and while I knew all the words (I am what you might call “advanced tourist”) it took me quite a while just to figure out what you were trying to do, and what my role in it was precisely.
In addition, there seemed no example of verbal interaction, where I might pronounce something. I had thought that there was since I read that a microphone was required. Why is that?
Furthermore, I don’t want CD’s, my computer, a Windows Vista based tablet, has no drive. And the online courses seem to be time limited (three months or six months). I’m in no hurry. Why don’t you price them by the course; I don’t want to have to hurry at it or have to pay again just to finish the course.

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi William, to answer some of your questions, we do have spoken and written activities in the course. We can send you an extended demo, if you would like to try that. Plus, you can always order the Complete Online Access, which you can use from any computer with internet. It comes with different features than Version 4 TOTALe. Please keep in mind that, although we have an iPad application, we are not optimized for other tablets. You may also choose to buy Version 4 TOTALe, which comes with disks (which will work on your computer forever) and an online component (with the first 3 months free and then a subscription of $25/month or less). If you look at our website, you’ll see that we try to offer different payment and software/online solutions.

  • William

I bought a Rosetta Stone Totale and I’m studying English, I have a Ipad (old version) not Ipad 2. Can I access by this divice? I’ve tried to download Rosetta Stone ltd in the Itunes store but I could not, do you know how why?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi William. Version 4 TOTALe still isn’t officially available on the international market. Judging by the .com.br in your email, we assume you are a Brazilian customer who has imported the program. The Mobile Companion won’t be available on the Brazilian app store until we officially release in Brazil. Even though the app is free, you will need a US account to get it, which means you will need a US credit card to create the account.

  • Jan

    Hi there,

I am not sure what happened here, but I have an online-only UK subscription and downloaded the iPad app from the US store. For a day or two everything worked fine, and then it stopped. The app now says that I do not have any active languages in my online account, whilst via browser I have no problem logging in and taking my course. I got onto an online chat with support, and they told me that the only way to get access is by buying Totale, and that there is no way to upgrade my online-only subscription to make it compatible with the iPad app?
Why is this???? Why did it work for two days, and then stopped?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hello Jan. We can verify that your online subscription does not have rights to the iPad application which is accessible to Version 4 TOTALe users only. Unfortunately, there is no upgrade available to your subscription at this time. We are unsure why the application launched for several days then stopped, but it was probably a glitch in the verification when the app was first installed. We apologize for the confusion.

    Hi Guys,

    Loving the Spanish version!

Can you please tell me when the app will be available on the Australian iTunes store?

    Cheers, Christie

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Christie, we won’t have the TOTALe Companion HD available in the Australian App store until we officially release Version 4 TOTALe in Australia. We haven’t released a date for that launch yet. Thanks for your question!

  • Heath

The requirement to have a wi-fi connection is a deal-breaker, I am afraid.

The whole point of having RS on iPad is to be able to study while traveling around, which by definition, in many places, pretty much means spotty or NO wi-fi coverage.

I was so excited about the possibility of RS on the iPad, despite the extremely large cost of both those items, that I was planning to buy both as soon as the program was released.

    Not anymore…

    🙁

    • Rosetta Stone

      Thanks for your feedback, Heath.

  • Meeshelle

Trying to figure what spanish i should learn. I want to learn for work in the states, bilingual job opportunities.. Do i need to buy the latin america or spain? thanks

  • Jocio

    Hi,
When this app will be available on portuguese app store ?
    Regards,
    J. Morais

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Jocio, until we release Version 4 TOTALe for the Portuguese market, the Version 4 TOTALe iPad App will not appear in the Portuguese App store. Thanks for checking with us! Hopefully we will launch soon!

  • Erin

I share Heath’s sentiments. I was so excited to hear about the iPad app, but then was immediately disappointed after reading the wi-fi/ 3G requirement. It means I cannot use RS on my commute, and that is my requirement for purchase.

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Erin. Sorry about your disappointment. We’ll keep this feedback in mind as we move forward with new updates for the iPad app.

  • Doris

Can’t wait to dry this out… When will it Be available in Germany?????? Thanks

    • Rosetta Stone

As soon as we launch Version 4 TOTALe in Germany, you’ll be able to access all the extras. We haven’t released any dates for new launches, so you’ll have to be patient with us. Thanks for your enthusiasm!

  • Paul

I’ve been using the Companion HD an my iPad for a few days and while it’s nice to be able to use RS seated in my easy chair, having to be tied to a WiFi connection is deal killer for me. I’m not sure I’ll renew my subscription when it expires.

  • julio

i have tried to install totale-companion in my ipad and i have just found out that it not avaiable here in brazil. do you know when this application will be avaiable for brasilian customers?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Julio, Version 4 TOTALe is sold in the US, Canada, Japan and the UK. The application is only available through the Apple Store in those countries. We’ll let you know if the application becomes available through the Apple Store in Brazil. Thanks for your question!

  • Lee

I love the latin america spanish course, having purchased level 2 a couple of years ago..still stumbling along. I have an ipad 2..and downloaded the ipad program. not clear on what i need to pay to have access to lessons? have been all over the site…I would love to be able to go back and get level one..:)

    thanks for any help..

    lee

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Lee, what version do you have? The iPad app complements Version 4 TOTALe. If you have Version 4 TOTALe, you can renew your subscription to the online services inside the program interface (although you may still have access, since our original deal included 15 months free). If you have Version 3, you can upgrade to Version 4 TOTALe for $49: http://www.rosettastone.com/totaleupgrade?cid=sm-bl. If you have an older version than Version 3, you will not be able to access the iPad app. Of course, if this is the case, you will always be able to access the core coursework you purchased. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

  • Kevin

I just got an iPad and was very excited to see a Rosetta Stone app for the iPad. Then I read the fine print that you need a TOTALe subscritption after the 3 month trial period expires. Very disappointing! I don’t want the online tutor. I don’t want the online games. I just wnated to have RS on my iPad. I wouldn’t mind if it was a one time charge. But monthly? Give me a break. Is Rosetta Stone considering jsut the mobile app without the tutor and games? Please say yes!

    • Rosetta Stone

Thanks for your suggestion, Kevin. Just out of curiosity, have you tried a Studio session yet?

  • Alex

Do you have an expected availability date for getting the app through the Mexican AppStore?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Alex, we don’t have a date to announce. But we can tell you that the app won’t be sold through the Mexican AppStore until we release Version 4 TOTALe in Mexico. Stay tuned to the blog for up-to-date information.

  • Jenn

Have you considered an Xbox Live adaptation for Rosetta Stone? It has a large online community (average over 20 million users login daily), with users that have headsets.

    • Rosetta Stone

      Thanks for your suggestion, Jenn!

  • Eric

I have RS Version 3 and like it a lot. I also have an iPad to make my life easier and especially for travel and comfort when using programs like RS when I don’t want to sit at a desk or carry a full computer.

I travel often to the country of the language I’m learning, so no need for online sessions. I get enough pronunciation corrections from my in-laws. I’m on long flights often, with no internet, when language study is great. An iPad app for RS version 3 (which I already paid for 3 levels and can use in perpetuity) would be ideal. I would even pay a $20 or so one-time fee to get the app.

It’s understandable that you want to drive business to your new subscription revenue model, but forcing me to subscribe to a service I don’t need, for an upgrade I don’t want, just so I can use RS on my iPad is alienating. Especially since there are dozens of language apps coming out on iPad which solve this problem as I grow more accustomed to doing things on it. So eventually I will lose interest in RS for future levels, languages, gifts, tools for my children, etc. and go with whatever else I find works well on an iPad as I’m doing now. Why don’t you offer a lite version on iPad for those in my situation, and a Pro version with the online extras for others who value those services? Please hook it up and help make the world a better place.

    • Rosetta Stone

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Eric!

  • Sam

When it will be released date in France ?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Sam, we don’t have a release date to announce yet for Version 4 TOTALe in France. Stay tuned for updates!

  • Amir

I have a web license which I log into with username and password. Can I use this app with my ipad? if so how do I sign in?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Amir, if you have a current web license for Version 4 TOTALe, you can download the Rosetta Stone TOTALe Companion HD from the App Store for free. Then, when prompted to log in, you can use your TOTALe username and password. Let us know if you have additional questions!

  • Julie

Is there any plan for an Android app? If so, when?

And I have access to TOTALe version 4 through my company but I’m not in any of those four countries… how can I install it on an iPad?

    Thanks!

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Julie, it’s a free download, so you may want to ask your company if they have an App Store account in the UK, US, Canada, Japan or Korea. You will only be able to access it by downloading the free app in a country-specific App Store. Sorry for the inconvenience.
