An Interview with Linguist Bruce Alan Johnson: How to Unlock Your Language-Learning Potential

I recently sat down with linguist Bruce Alan Johnson, an author and linguist who speaks seven languages. In our two-part series, he shared insights into language learning by touching upon questions frequently asked by those trying their hand at language learning. These included

  • Can anyone learn a new language?
  • What’s the best way to learn another language?
  • What’s wrong with the traditional grammar-translation method?

Read a transcript of some of our conversation below, and click on the audio file to hear the first part of the interview: (more…)

Learning Spanish Without Translation

I have taken spanish classes, but was never able to speak and comprehend spanish without translating to english. For the first time, I am able to do this. I learned so much better with this product than my classes, and it was wonderful and worth every penny. Thank you so much for Rosetta Stone. I am thinking of purchasing Swahili. This is the best learning product I have ever used.

Global Education Award Presented to Rosetta Stone’s Chairman

I’ve talked to many recruiters who say it’s necessary to speak more than one language to succeed in today’s business environment. The growth of the global economy means that an individual in, say, Tokyo is competing against and working with people from across the globe. So how can a person succeed if they can’t communicate in more than one language?

For nearly 20 years those of us at Rosetta Stone have worked to promote language skills in schools around the world to prepare students for their global futures. The World Affairs Council of Washington, DC, recently presented Rosetta Stone with…

I was able to help in an orphanage in Cuba!

I was on a trip of a lifetime to Cuba the aim was to renovate an orpahange with the money we had donated. I bought Rosetta Stone Levels 1, 2 & 3 because I wanted to learn Latin American Spanish anyway. When we got to the orphanage I was able to ask what they wanted and also to speak to them and play just the language made it fun but the people made a thousand times better.

The Language of Beauty

There is nothing like going back to review units in your Rosetta Stone language software. After having been buried in work for the last several months with little time for my Vietnamese, I sat down today to get back to studying and was prompted to do the Adaptive Recall, which I did. It was so helpful!

To me, this is an under-recognized feature of Rosetta Stone that I love. Although I have gone through each lesson multiple times to strengthen my language-learning experience, I wouldn’t really have to because Rosetta Course is designed to naturally and automatically take you back through the…

Scusi?

“Excuse me?” This is something I’ve said often throughout my life. “What did you say?” “Come again?” “Huh?” “Say it again? I didn’t hear you.” I was so accustomed to saying those phrases that, after a while, I became more than a bit concerned. It’s one thing to say those things as a child, deeply engaged in a fantasy world and then suddenly interrupted by reality. It’s quite another to be present (more or less) and still not be able to hear all that I want. So I went to an audiologist. He returned with this diagnosis:

“You have hearing…

A Strange Conversation in Switzerland with an Ecuadorian Bartender

Why is it that when we’re on vacation adventure knocks at the door? I was thinking about the last few months here in Lausanne and the fact that I didn’t have adventures to share. On the other hand, during the week I spent in Paris something memorable seemed to happen to me every day. You might think this is a characteristic of Paris. But I think it is in the nature of the traveler. This reflection led me to try to rediscover my beloved Lausanne.

I wonder if one should move every time a couple of months go by without adventures. Although,…

Rosetta Studio Live Language Coaching

I recently participated in a Studio session with Karla. It was my first Studio session and honestly I was a bit apprehensive. From the start, Karla put me at ease and was very helpful, encouraging, and had a nice sense of humor. I made a lot of mistakes but was encouraged and supported every step of the way.I learned a lot and left motivated to do more. A great overall experience! Thank you, Karla!
