But how do you make it happen?
It helps to first have a picture in your head of how you want your language-learning classroom to function with the new technology. You’ll want to ask yourself:
- What are my available resources?
- How much interaction do I want with the kids?
- How comfortable am I with letting programs and apps instruct the students?
- Where do grades come from? Do I even need grades?
Available resources will determine a lot about the shape of your model. If each student will have constant access to a device or PC, that gives you a lot of options. If you have to share a lab or a cart with other teachers, you might need to consider a Rotation model. Many schools and districts have implemented BYOD policies, which can help answer some of these questions.
Let’s assume the sky’s the limit in terms of available access; every child has a device in their hands all the time.
- There are blended-learning models where teachers play much of the same role as they did before, introducing new units and forming the building blocks of new information offline before handing it off to a language-learning program such as one from Rosetta Stone to help students practice.
- In some implementations, the software is trusted enough to be the primary driver of language learning, enabling the instructor to focus more attention on struggling students. This is becoming more and more common as budgets have not yet rebounded from the previous decade.
Don’t forget about the possibility of creating your own model that works for you. Your language-learning solution should be flexible enough to allow that. If it’s not, reconsider.
The last thing to consider is what type of feedback you would like from the system. How can you tell progress is being made? Is the reporting informed enough to help you with your grading?
