Growth In The Hispanic Workplace

The Hispanic population in the United States is one of the fastest growing today. Diversity Executive reported that the Hispanic population in several states has either reached the level of, or is rapidly approaching congruity with, the non-Hispanic population. In fact, growth of this population group is so rapid that the Hispanic population nationwide is expected to increase by more than 100 percent by 2050.

The magazine also indicated that not only is the Hispanic population growing, but so is Hispanic representation in the workforce. According to Diversity Executive data, more Hispanic students are graduating high school than ever before, and enrollment of Hispanic students in college is the second highest of any major ethnic group in the United States.

While the Hispanic population is enjoying a consistently growing share of the workforce, attracting top talent will require HR professionals to cultivate an understanding of which corporate values tend to sit atop the list for this group.

One of the key differences between workers of Hispanic descent and their non-Hispanic counterparts is that while the latter often flock to young startups and new entrepreneurial opportunities, many Hispanic employees show a preference for older, more established brands and larger companies. The study indicates a high value placed on job security and financial stability may be at the root of this preference, as 75 percent of respondents surveyed indicated that they view work as a path to growth and economic stability.

To attract talent from this rapidly expanding pool, employers should be sure to present their company culture in a way that highlights these values. Drawing attention to your company’s employee development programs and options for career growth and advancement may help demonstrate that your company is one that values its employees and wants to take an active role in helping to develop their skills.

Diversity Executive found flexibility was another major factor of common importance. The magazine-conducted survey revealed that many potential candidates from the Hispanic population value flexible, nontraditional work arrangements. Out of those surveyed, 72 percent found more unconventional work opportunities such as time shifting and flexible schedules either important or extremely important.

A key motivator for this was a desire to maintain a flexible work-life balance to better manage family concerns. Some 68 percent of those surveyed indicated that family-friendly flexibility, such as schedules that allowed for picking up or dropping off children from school, were extremely important, while half went so far as to say that their ideal arrangement would allow them to shift their schedules daily.
