Arabic may look intimidating at first, however getting a handle on Arabic letters is one of the first steps, and is actually fairly simple. The Arabic alphabet is made up of 28 letters, all consonants. Just as in English, there are different styles to the formation of the letters, but the styling is generally consistent.
It’s important to note that while Arabic does share similar sounds with English, there are also a few sounds in Arabic that don’t exist at all in other languages. A few hard consonants sound raspier than their English counterparts and vowel sounds may be held twice as long depending on their placement in the word. There are also consonants which are both voiced and voiceless. This may be tricky to get the hang of at first, and involve whether or not you hold the sound in your throat or make it primarily in your mouth. Here’s how you would generally say “How are you?” and a few Arabic words.
- How are you?” = “كيف حالك؟” (kayf halik)
- Cheers = في صحتك
- You can do it! = “أحسنت، لقد أصبت !”
