There are over 128 million people worldwide who are speaking German as a second or learned language. And you could be one of them. While the perception of some out there is that German is a difficult language to learn, that’s not necessarily the case. And it’s not something that should deter you from taking on this goal. The German language does, however, include vocabulary that can be somewhat of a challenge to learn. Mark Twain is said to have famously taken issue with the “clumsy” German language and their many compound and overly complicated multi-syllable words.

An example of this is the German word Freundschaftsbezeugung which translates to “demonstrations of friendship.” While one would agree that the word is quite long, by breaking it up into recognizable and understandable parts, you may have an easier time figuring it out. As you see, the compound word starts with the single word “Freund.” The word “Freund” is called a cognate, a counterpart with the same meaning of the English word “friend.”

If you are an English speaker, you already have an advantage to learning German as English and German are linguistic siblings.

If you don’t have time or resources to devote to an in-person classroom to learn German, you should consider taking an online German course. That’s where Rosetta Stone can help you shine.
