by Rosetta Stone

As the fourth most-spoken language in the world, Hindi (मानक हिन्दी) is one of the official languages of India along with English. It is spoken by nearly half a billion people, and is the most popular language in India. About half of the population of native speakers are located in India, but it is also widely-spoken in Nepal, South Africa, Fiji, Mauritius, Suriname, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Hindi writing script, Devanagari, can be notably troublesome for new learners. But you will only need to study the basics to begin to speak and understand Hindi. Your focus should be on learning common words and phrases in context and then practicing their pronunciation instead of focusing on vocabulary acquisition. If you have chosen the goal of learning Hindi, start off with these simple words and short phrases in the Hindi language:

  • नमस्कार (namaskāra) = Hello
  • नमस्ते (Namaste) = Goodbye
  • हाँ (hān) = Yes
  • नहीं (nahīṃ) = No
  • माफ कीजिए (māpha kījie) = Sorry
  • स्वागत (svāgata) = Welcome
  • आप (āpa) = You (formal/polite)

To learn the Hindi language and thrive in real-world conversations, you’ll need a language learning program primed to help you achieve this goal. That’s where Rosetta Stone comes in.

Pronunciation is one of the cornerstones of success in learning a language. Hindi has some distinctive pronunciation rules, and once you learn them, you’ll have a much easier time pronouncing some of the sounds consonants make. Hindi has voiced versus unvoiced consonants where the principal difference in sounds is whether or not you vibrate your vocal cords. Additionally, there are aspirated and unaspirated consonants where the difference is releasing a puff of breath through your mouth along with the sound. Let Rosetta Stone help you make sure your Hindi pronunciation is accurate. Our patented TruAccent™ speech-recognition engine compares your voice in real-time to native speakers. This feedback is crucial, and allows you to fine-tune your pronunciation and speak Hindi with confidence.

While getting your Hindi pronunciation down may take some time, consistency in your practice is key. Just remember, it’s far more important that you feel confident speaking everyday phrases in Hindi than it is to know every Hindi word or grammar rule.
