How to Say How Much in Spanish

If you would like to say, “How much?” in Spanish, you would generally say, “¿Cuánto cuesta?” To use the specific phrase, “How much does it cost?” in Spanish, you might instead go with, “¿Cuánto vale?” If you find yourself in Mexico City in an informal exchange, you could say “¿Cuánto te debo?”

Getting down the various day-to-day expressions in Spanish might seem like a challenge, but with focus and practice, you can do it––especially if you already speak related languages like French and Italian. Both Italian and French are quite closely related to Spanish, with all three coming directly from Latin. Even English shares many of the same Latin roots. That’s why you can find a ton of English words like “absolutely” that look nearly identical in French (absolument), Italian (assolutamente), and Spanish (absolutamente).

The Spanish language, thankfully, also has a simple pronunciation system. There are just a few irregularities. This is unlike in English, where the connection between letters and sounds sometimes seems not to follow obvious rules. The Spanish alphabet is also very closely tied to French, Italian, English, and most other languages in Western Europe. You only need to learn three more letters: ch (chay), ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

With Rosetta Stone’s immersive approach, you’ll learn the language, not just the words.

What makes it so effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in your everyday life. So it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle any situation with ease and confidence.

Learn Spanish Words and Phrases

For beginning Spanish learners, one of the first steps to take is learning proper pronunciation of the letters of the Spanish alphabet and the Spanish words that represent numbers. Good news for English speakers: you may find that you can learn the letters of the Spanish alphabet quickly, because the differences between the English and Spanish alphabets are really quite minor.

It will be important for you to focus on proper Spanish pronunciation as you learn the Spanish alphabet and numbers. You’ll find that some of the letters in the Spanish alphabet have sounds that are familiar, while other Spanish letters may sound quite different. For example, the letter j in Spanish is pronounced as an h sound. You may already know this if you’re familiar with the pronunciation of Spanish names such as Julio, Jose and Javier.

Some learn the Spanish numbers more quickly than Spanish letters. In fact, many people can count to 10 in Spanish:

  • uno = one
  • dos = two
  • tres = three
  • cuatro = four
  • cinco = five
  • seis = six
  • siete = seven
  • ocho = eight
  • nueve = nine
  • diez = ten

Once you have these numbers down, you can move on to numbers like ciento veintiocho (128). You can do this by applying what you already know and then learning a few simple patterns for forming the names of larger numbers.

Spanish is a much more phonetically consistent language than is English. That means that Spanish words nearly always sound just like they are spelled. You can apply this phonetic consistency to confidently pronounce seemingly complex, multi-syllable Spanish words. They might look a bit overwhelming, but you can do it.

Polishing your Spanish pronunciation does require that you get immediate and accurate feedback on your spoken Spanish. Such feedback can help you make needed corrections to your pronunciation. When your pronunciation is accurate, you’ll want to practice until you can shape the sounds that make up spoken Spanish with ease.
