There are a couple of ways to say “I don’t understand” in Spanish, and depending on what it is that you don’t understand will dictate your translation.

A common reason people would want to use this phrase would be to let a fellow Spanish speaker know that they don’t know what they are saying. In that case, “I don’t understand” would translate to “No entiendo español.” (or española for the feminine version)

Another reason would be to tell someone “I don’t understand,” as in, “I don’t understand (the question).” For that situation, you would use “No comprendo la pregunta.”

Learning a few basics in Spanish is often fairly simple for beginners, especially those who speak languages like English, Italian, or French. Languages from the same family often share words that are cognates or have noticeable similarities because they are derived from the same mother tongue (root language). In addition to vocabulary which sounds familiar, you’ll quickly realize that Spanish has a clear system of pronunciation, far fewer irregularities than many other languages, and an alphabet that’s a close match to the English one.

Many people decide to learn Spanish because they frequently encounter the Spanish language in their everyday life. Spanish is the second most used language in the United States, and is prominently featured in popular music and TV shows. There are others who choose to learn Spanish because they have plans to travel to or work in one of the 20 countries where Spanish is the official language.
