How to Say That in Spanish

If you’d like to say the word “that” in Spanish, it depends entirely on how you intend to use it. As a demonstrative pronoun, it could be

  • eso
  • ese
  • esa
  • aquello
  • aquel
  • aquella

As a pronoun that introduces a clause, it would be “que.” As an adjective, it could be “ese,” “esa,” “aquel,” or aquella.” As an adverb, it would be “tan.” And as a conjunction, it would be “que.”

Getting down the nuances of “that” in Spanish might seem intimidating. Fortunately, comfort with the language comes with practice and with simply picking up the basics. Learning tends to be the smoothest for people who already speak a related language like English, French, or Italian. Like Spanish, these languages either come directly out of Latin or have been deeply influenced by it. This is why you’ll find English words like “natural” that look and sound either similar or virtually identical in French (naturel), Italian (naturale), and Spanish (natural). Beyond the thousands of similar vocabulary words, Spanish also has a simple system of pronunciation. There are hardly any irregularities in spelling or pronunciation.

Rosetta Stone’s Dynamic Immersion® method helps you learn the language, not just the words. What makes it so effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in everyday life. So, it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle situations with ease and confidence.

Learn Spanish Words and Phrases

Many people come to the decision to learn Spanish because they find that they frequently encounter the language in their everyday life. After all, Spanish is spoken across the U.S. and is commonly heard on TV, in movies, and in music. Other people decide to learn Spanish because they have intentions to do business, vacation, or volunteer in any one of the 20 countries where Spanish is the official language.

So whatever your reasons, you can get off to a strong start by first focusing on learning how to pronounce the basic and frequently used Spanish words and phrases. This approach will help you reach the goal of participating in everyday conversations with any of the estimated 437 million Spanish speakers worldwide.

It’s all too common for some new language learners to get sidetracked trying to memorize long lists of vocabulary words and phrases. Unfortunately, these new learners then become frustrated because they find themselves unable to understand or be understood in everyday conversations. That’s why it’s smart to learn to understand and pronounce basic and commonly used Spanish words and short phrases. This practical approach to language learning will help you acquire the ability to comfortably engage in everyday conversation with locals.

It’s worth pointing out that Spanish does have some characteristics that can make proper pronunciation of some words a bit challenging for new learners. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practice for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish-language experts counsel new learners to practice making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.
